Get Real is an evidence- based comprehensive sex education middle school curriculum suitable for all teens regardless of their sexual experience or orientation. The Get Real Approach emphasizes social and emotional skills as a key component of healthy relationships and decision making. It promotes abstinence from sex as a safe and healthy choice for adolescents; and supports parents and other caring adults as the primary sexuality educators of their children through family activities that encourage dialogue between students and the caring adults in their lives about sexual health topics.

6th Grade Get Real focuses on healthy communication, relationships, refusal skills, and boundary setting. Students will learn the steps to making a decision and the value of abstinence. They will also be introduced to bodily changes experienced during puberty.

7th Grade Get Real reinforces abstinence and the decision-making skills/values learned in 6th grade and builds on creating a safe school environment.  Students will gain skills in media literacy and vocabulary regarding sexual identity. 7th graders are introduced to STI and pregnancy prevention.

8th Grade Get Real focuses on STI/ HIV and pregnancy prevention, healthy relationships, practices decision-making, and reinforces the values of abstinence.

All three grades have Family Activities at the end of each lesson. Parents are strongly encouraged to get involved in their student’s learning! Family letters and activities will be provided through your student’s online school platform.

Each grade will have nine lessons taking place during Health and PE classes.

SexEdVA’s PREP program utilizes the Get Real curriculum.
